The Grand 1894 Opera House to Present “Ike: The Documentary in Commemoration of 2nd Anniversary Hurricane Ike, Sept. 13th
In commemoration of the second anniversary of Hurricane Ike, The Grand 1894 Opera House will present an encore showing of the nationally-acclaimed production “IKE: The Documentary” on Monday, September 13. The performance is free to the public and will be presented at 7pm.
“IKE: A Documentary – The Story of a Torn City Rebuilt by Everyday Heroes” was produced and presented by Robert Weiss and The Hurricane Story Tellers in association with Ball High School and Galveston ISD. Just seven months after Ike devastated Galveston Island, Weiss’ Ball High Advanced Media Technology Class created and dedicated a story of hope to the island –with all proceeds from contributions dedicated to the Galveston ISD Educational Foundation.
“We started out the project with the intention of giving back to the community, but I was surprised to see how the students were healing their own pain through making this film”, Weiss noted. “And the students certainly found a stronger connection to the community of Galveston.” The students – aka “Hurricane Story Tellers” combed the island and interviewed/photographed residents who rode out the storm; those who lived in “Tent City’, as well as talking with volunteers and city leaders working to aid in the recovery. Executive producer was Robert Weiss; producers – Heather Weiss and Aaron Weiss. Lead interviewer was Jennifer Willcut; director of photographer was Rafael Lazo, with additional footage by Natalie Martin, William Gomez, and Melnikia Smith. Narration and essay was by Mamie Aoughsten; marketing and research by Austin Almanza and Jovanna Torres.
