“Hiawatha’s Hibiscus” by Jennifer Peck
“Hiawatha’s Hibiscus” is Jennifer Peck’s vibrant collage on this month’s cover. Surrounding the luscious yellow hibiscus, red penta and white impatients float on sea-foam green. This piece was part of a recent series featuring the most valuable players in Galveston’s Gardens. Some of the Island’s migratory monarch butterflies also make an appearance.
New works, in this same genre, will be on exhibit in March, executed with patterned and stenciled backgrounds starring roses, peonies, and periwinkle. Many of the new works are smaller in scale and in a soft, more natural palette than works past.
Peck is enrolled in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s, Glassell School this spring acquiring new mixed media techniques to tie into her current work, and exploring different subject matter in personal mythologies. A collection inspired by storytelling will be shown in June.
This year PeckArts has added a few new talents to their collection, one of which is Doug Sweet, of Baytown. His hyper-real fruit and flowers bathed in light and resting in shimmering glass bowls contain elements of both realism and abstraction. Robin Renee Hix is also new, painting jewel toned oils over gelatin photographs of playful beach life. The new works can be seen more easily this month with the building’s construction finally complete, both in PeckArts gallery and studio at 2208 Postoffice. The gallery’s website has also recently been revamped and can be visited at PeckArts.com. Open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m.
