Tina’s is definitely not your typical tourist stop on The Strand. You will find no Glaveston t-shirts, plastic flip flops or brightly colored beach towels.

Don’t worry though, there are plenty of those shops around. Tina’s however, has a wide range of clothing, home decor, jewelry and other items.
One of the products available at Tina’s is the fine metalwork made by hand. These handmade metalwares are both “practical and stylish”. Available for engraving, they are popular at weddings and as gifts.
They are oven friendly so you are able to take the dish right from the stove and proudly display it at your table for serving. The dishes come in many shapes and sizes and are great for any occasion. The only place to buy these fine dishes downtown are at Tina’s and they look even better in person than they do in pictures.
Another item that Tina’s boasts is the Tryst signature fragrance from the Lady Primrose collection. They are the exclusive carrier of Lady Primrose in Galveston and carry many different products in the Tryst and Necture fragrance.
The description of Tryst from Lady Primrose is “our signature fragrance and most glamorous collection leaves you awestruck with its bold bouquet of green florals, fleur d’ orangery and jasmine”. These perfumes, gels, body lotions, candles and more all come in crystal containers that would look beautiful on any vanity or bathroom counter.
Tina’s is located at 2326 Strand. For more information call 409-762-6816 or visit online at www.tinasonthestrand.com.

Fullen Jewelry store on Postoffice has a wide variety of jewelry that will suit all tastes. In various prices and metal compositions they offer necklaces, rings, bracelets and more.

The feature attraction of the shop is the Custom Clasp Collection. This clasp collection is a great addition to any jewelry box and will not take up much space. With a custom clasp, you purchase a single bracelet and then buy multiple clasps that are interchangeable.
The bracelets come in many designs. All have a sterling silver base but there is also a choice of different gold accents on the silver. There are many nautical clasp designs such as starfish, mermaids and anchors but all themes are available.
For jewelry wearers who like to be in season but hate to purchase new items every few months this bracelet is a smart buy. The clasps are reasonably priced and fun to accessorize with. For instance if you wanted to have a lizard for the summer season but then felt an anchor would be more appropriate for fall it would be a simple switch.
The store also offers jewelry in alternative metals such as stainless steels, tungsten, and titanium. These metals help the jewelry stand out without losing the classical feel. Stop by the store to fully appreciate the clasp collection and other items offered.
Fullen’s is located at 2215 Postoffice. For more information call 409-763-0555.

Kidnapped by Pirates

available at Galveston Bookshop

Evelyn Gill Hilton has spun an exciting tale based on the true story of her very own great-great grandfather, Charles Tilton and his adventures with infamous French privateer Jean Lafitte. Hilton was was born in Baytown in 1939 and spent 26 years teaching in the Texas public school system.

This exciting adventure, written for teens and older, centers around Tilton, who was born in New Hampton, New Hampshire in 1799. He was 14 and on his first whaling voyage in the Atlantic, when kidnapped amd brought in chains to Lafitte’s thousand-man, Galveston encampment in late 1814 as a ransom prize. The French buccaneer was enraged that his men would attack an American vessel and whalers and ordered the men hung.

Lafitte was known for his soft heart toward children and took pity on the boy, ordered that no harm come to him under penalty of death, and offered him a job on his ship. Liking Lafitte, the audacious teenager eagerly accepted and ended up staying with his new friends for six years of adventures, many of which are chronicled in this book.
After the government expelled Lafitte and his band from Galveston Island, the men scattered and Lafitte sailed off toward Mexico. Charles, now 20, owned a schooner, called The Black Jack, which he and some friends sailed up the Trinity River and scuttled to prevent the government from finding them. He never saw Lafitte again, but went on to apply for a land grant from the Spanish government and settle an area called The Cove, near what is known as present-day Baytown, Texas.

Kidnapped By Pirates can be purchased at the Galveston Bookshop located at 317 23rd Street. For more information call 409-750-8200 or visit them online at www.galvestonbookshop.com.
